Regarding Web Site Indexing

Proper indexing of your web site is a key condition for success of your online business. Before search engines start listing your site in search results, your site must be indexed. In other words, search engines must know about existence of your web site or newly added pages.

Site Indexing can be achieved in two ways. You can directly submit your site to search engines (or use submission services, often provided by web hosts). Or, you can just wait while robots from search engines will reach your site. Robots can come through links from other sites. While direct submission will never hurt your site, getting a visit from a robot in a second case often is even more beneficial. In this case your site may get higher rating just out of the fact that if someone gives a link to your site, than it is worthwhile being linked.

The timing needed to get your site indexed may vary from several days to several months. Of course, it depends on particular search engines and their indexing algorithms. Google is the fastest indexing search engine on modern Internet. It is a proven fact that your site will be indexed faster, if you would have several in-links to your site coming from a web site of high ranking.

Indexing of newly added pages happens faster, if the site having a frequent updates. In such case engines may consider such fast growing/updating sites up-to-date and useful for users, and hence, assign them some priority on indexing.

Below are few tips, which may help you to get your site indexed faster:

- The distance between your main page and any other page of your site shall not exceed three clicks;

- Build a map of your site, link your front page to that map;

- Try not to make pages larger than 200 kB: crawlers rarely go deeper than that size.

- It is better to avoid parametrically complicated URLs in your links, such links slow down indexing. Use links which can be easily read by humans.

- Indexing instructions can be made with the aid of robots.txt file, use it.

The progress in indexing of your web site can be checked in logs of your site host or by direct inquiry to search engines. Dont be surprised by fluctuations in number of indexed pages in your site: this can happen for several reasons: server or referrers could be down, or, perhaps, search engine changed its algorithm.

Have a nice indexing!
